Throughout their close study of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, students engage in a detailed analysis of the text. Student will develop an understanding of how ideas, content, forms and language of a text interact within the text and affect the responder. Students will consider Haddon’s personal context and the distinctive qualities of the text including narrative elements such as structure, characters, themes and setting. Student will also consider key ideas, themes and concepts and analyse key scenes in the novel. Students will also develop skills in writing a Close Study of Literature analytical response (essay).
Through the study of the unit of work students have the opportunity to learn about:
- how to closely study a literary text
- Haddon’s personal context and how this has influenced his work
- textual elements in the novel, including content and language forms and features
- key ideas, themes and concepts in the novel
- key scenes in the novel
- how to prepare to write a Close Study of Literature essay.
Students also have the opportunity to learn to:
- prepare to write a Close Study of Literature essay
- analyse distinctive qualities of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time
- practice answering examination style questions.
