Students will study selected poems by Kenneth Slessor and related texts to develop an understanding and appreciation of how human experiences are explored in texts. Working through this unit offers students the chance to think for themselves and develop a deep personal knowledge about how human experiences are represented in texts. A potential thesis is to look at how texts about human experiences represent identity and culture and for what purpose. Students will analyse Slessor’s personal context and how this has influenced his work, as well as the distinct qualities of the prescribed text and related texts in terms of construction, content and language. They will explore some key concepts such as memory, place, time and loss that underpin the poems before we look at each poem in turn. Students will also be guided through the process of answering unseen related texts in the HSC examination, Paper 1, Section 1: Reading Task and an analytical response for Section II.

Students will also practise answering NSW HSC examination style questions for Sections I and II.

Through the study of the prescribed text and related texts students will develop their thesis about texts and human experiences and make judgements about how medium of production, textual form and choice of language shape meaning and influence perspectives. Students will also explore how to connect related texts with the prescribed text. Note that students are not required to write about related text in Section II of the NSW HSC examination, Paper 1. However, students are required to refer to related texts in their school-based assessment task.

The prescribed poems are:

  • ‘Wild Grapes’
  • ‘Gulliver’
  • ‘Out of Time’
  • ‘Vesper-Song of the Reverend Samuel Marsden’
  • ‘William Street’
  • ‘Beach Burial’.
