This workbook provides students with an opportunity to explore how composers use various devices to tell a story through the lens of Joseph Campbell’s ‘The Hero’s Journey’ and Maureen Murdock’s ‘The Heroine’s Journey’. Students consider the mythology of stories, including Maureen Murdock’s ‘heroine’s journey’, and evaluate the representation of the hero’s/heroine’s journey in film and other fiction and non-fiction texts. These texts will also be explored to challenge and reinforce students’ perceptions of heroes and heroines in our society and to consider their value, purpose and universal significance. In addition, students undertake a close study of either a film, novel, short story or hybrid text, including writing a review of their prescribed text. For the formative assessment task, students create a storyboard of a narrative for their chosen genre, demonstrating their understanding of the arc of the hero/heroine and elements of the hero/heroine genre.
