This unit of work looks at the meaning and significance of literature in our world today. Students will analyse narrative elements, such as plot, characters, themes, settings, narrative viewpoint and writing style in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee in order to determine the literary merit of the text. Students will consider ethical issues in the novel and evaluate ideas in the novel against their own values and attitudes. Students will compare ideas and techniques in the film and novel versions of the text. Students will learn about the nature of literary critiques, and develop skills in using the language and structural features of essay writing. Students will write an essay assessing the literary merit of the novel.
