This unit introduces students to the principles and practices of journalism in the media. Students will develop knowledge and understanding of the structure of the media in Australia and abroad and how they are systems of power. Students will develop in skills in discernment about the methods the media uses to positions readers to adopt certain viewpoints, values and beliefs. Students will explore factual and persuasive visual and written techniques used in the media, including online and in print in news reports, info-graphics, feature articles, commentaries and advertising. They will compare a number of media texts to determine the validity of information and ideas expressed by considering the type of language used, ideology presented and facts represented, including how to determine them. Students will create a small newspaper which includes one factual news report and one persuasive advertisement.
